Prayer

We teach our members to spend a minimum of ten minutes a day in conversation or connection with God (prayer), as you would with any good friend.  Here is a basic format:

1 minute           Calm down.

Breathe deeply.  Turn your mind over to God.  One way - Breath prayer.  Silently or aloud, repeat:  “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.”  Breathe it in, hold a moment, breathe it out, slowly.  Repeat.

4 minutes          Read the Bible.

Read through the Gospel of Mark, choose a text from a list provided by your pastor, or read one psalm each night.  See here for some options to enrich your Bible reading.

4 minutes          Pray.

Prayer is conversation with God.  Especially, talk with God about what you’ve done and thought today.  Try the ACTS prayer:

A - Adoration:  Tell God you love God, and why.

C - Confession:  How did you do today at following Christ?  Name whatever is coming between you and God.

     Examine yourself:

     • What did you do today that was good?

     • What did you do today that was evil?

T - Thanksgiving:  What, specifically, are you thankful for?

S - Supplication:  Root word, “supply.”  Ask God to supply whatever you need.  Pray for others and their needs.

1 minute           Close.

Place your life, those you love, and your concerns, joys, hopes, and activities for the day into the hands of God.  Repeat a closing affirmation, for example, John 3:17:   “God did not send the son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
